When I first started blogging I had no idea about ins and outs of the food blogging and being a food influencer. I just wanted to share my love of brunch and entertaining with whoever was willing to listen. My blog posts were focused on the things I found interesting and in turn assumed others wanted to know more about.

I like that the book was interactive. It gave you a lesson but then showed you how to put it in to practice. Here are some of my key takeaways from the book.

Discovering your dream customers

In his new book Traffic Secrets, entrepreneur Russell Brunson reveals the classic and foundational direct marketing techniques to help you find your ideal audience and provide the content they crave.

My greatest discovery in reading this book and doing the challenge was honing in on who my audience is and how I can help them. Here are 3 ways to find your ideal audience and provide valuable content.

Who is your dream customer?

.

The most fundamental question, Traffic Secret helps you discover is who your dream follower or customer is. This is important because if you are talking to everyone then you are essentially talking to no one. Figuring out who is consuming my content allowed me to tailor my message to those specific people.

For instance, the language I would use for an experienced chef is going to be very different than the recipe and cooking instruction I would write for a college student who is just learning to cook. While these two people may be both looking up French toast recipes, the recipe created for them is going to look different.

Traffic Secrets goes into great detail about how to discover your dream customers. Once you find out who your dream customer is, the next obvious question is, where are they?

As much as I wish the whole, build it and they will come was true, we know that is not the case. The saying should build it, tell the people looking for it, and then they may come. After I figured out who my audience was, I then had to figure out, how to make them aware of my content. Traffic Secret provides a list of exercises to help you find out where your people are hanging out, and how to go hang out with them. For instance, going back to my previous example if my people are college students learning how to cook, they are probably not hanging out in the same Facebook groups, reading the same blogs, or even using the same social media platform as the experienced chef.

This lesson was critical for me, because finding out where my dream customers were, made it that much easier to reach them. I was able to share my content in groups and on formats that they were already on.

How to create the content your dream customer needs?

Once you find out who and where your people are the next step is finding out the type of content they crave. In my quest for finding out how best to serve my audience, I needed to know how I could help them because honestly, that’s why people tune in to your content. Either to learn, be entertained, or to be inspired.

The best way for me to know what my audience wanted, was simply to ask them. I also paid close attention to the content they responded best to. This helped give me an idea of what they wanted to see more of. Creating content has become much easier now that I know exactly what my followers are looking for and how I can best serve them.
